TRUST WALK:
Mentors and Fatherless Children
Remind participants of the challenges children face by navigating an obstacle course blindfolded, strengthening the mentor-child bond.
Materials:
- Blindfolds for half the group
- Obstacle course props (chairs, boxes)
Procedure:
1. Pair off participants as parents (1's) and children (2's).
2. Blindfold children; parents lead them through the obstacle course without speaking, with verbal directions, and by shouting orders.
3. Discuss feelings and experiences after each round.
4. Switch roles; parents use one approach: physical guidance, verbal directions, or shouting orders.
5. Reflect on the impact of each approach.
Discussion Questions:
1. How did it feel to be the "child" relying on the "parent"?
2. How did it feel to be the "parent" responsible for the "child"?
3. Did trust play a role in the activity?
4. What did the activity teach you about the needs of small children?
5. How will this influence your approach to guiding and leading children?
Reflect on the process, allowing personal growth and understanding in the mentor-child relationship.
